Perhaps you’ve been indulging in conventional marijuana for years, but have not quite gotten into dabs yet? Maybe you’re a little intimidated at the prospect of trying dabs? What exactly is dabbing?
While smoking dabs is certainly different than smoking blunts, it’s not so different that you should avoid it entirely. All that it requires is a little knowledge and background.
Looking for this knowledge and background? You can find it all right here in our total beginner’s guide to dabbing.
What Exactly Are Dabs?
In more recent years, a new form of cannabis extraction, through cannabis concentrate, or “dabs” has risen to popularity among smokers as an alternative to the traditional technique of burning flower. Essentially, a “dab” is a tiny amount of pure psychoactive essential oils extracted from the cannabis plant.
Utilizing an extraction process with a third-party solvent like carbon dioxide or butane is how these essential oils and terpenes are synthesized from weed and a “wax”, “budder” “shatter” or other form of concentrated oil is produced..
Many people prefer this because it allows them to only consume the part of weed that actually medicates them. But specifically, what is dabbing and why is it unique to cannabis consumers?
Dabs are forms of marijuana extract which are designed to be vaporized and smoked. They’re available in many different forms, including wax, shatter, and butane hash oil, to name just a few.
Compared to other types of marijuana, dabs contain a very high level of THC. In some cases, dabs can even contain as much as four times the amount of THC that marijuana buds contain.

How is Dabbing Done?
Dabbing is done by smoking vaporized marijuana extract through a glass dab device. Attached to this device is a piece of metal known as a nail. By heating up this nail to very high temperatures, you are able to melt extracted wax or oil and send them through the dab device as a vapor.
While you’re vaporizing the wax or oil, you take a hit from the dab device in the same way that you would from a bong. It’s important, however, to approach this process with care. A hit from a dab is much stronger than a hit from a bong.
What Tools are Needed for Dabbing?
There are quite a few tools associated with dabs. In order to dab correctly, these tools are a necessity. Dabbing 101 begins with these items.
The dab rig is a bong-like water pipe which intakes vapor from your marijuana extract and allows it to be inhaled. You can buy a dab rig at any reputable marijuana dispensary.
A dab tool is a small, metal rod upon which you place your dab. After its end has been covered in the extract, you place it in the heated nail of the dabbing device so that the extract can be vaporized.
In dab terms, a nail is a small piece of metal, stone, or glass which you attach to your dab device. This piece is heated to extreme temperatures so that it is capable of vaporizing your extract.
Domes are not always needed for dabs but can be useful. They are essentially small, glass covers which go over nails and prevent vapor from escaping.
In order to light a dab rig, you’ll need a very hot torch of some kind. In most cases, a butane torch is the best bet. In any case, you need to ensure that it produces a blue flame.
What are the Advantages of Dabbing?
People don’t just dab because it’s mechanically and functionally different than other types of smoking. They dab because it offers benefits that you can’t get with other types of smoking.
Accommodates a More Rapid High
Because smoking dabs involves smoking marijuana extract, it facilitates a much more rapid high. Marijuana concentrate is substantially stronger than typical marijuana bud, sometimes containing as much as four times the THC.
In essence, if you’re looking for a quick high, dabs will accommodate you.
Can Be Done Quickly
Not only do dabs get you higher quicker, they can be prepared quicker as well. Whereas a blunt requires rolling and a bowl requires packing, a dab only requires heating. Just heat it until its nail is red, wait 10 seconds, and have at it.
Produces an Inviting Taste
Marijuana extracts are supplemented with a number of different flavors, allowing them to possess much more inviting tastes than other types of marijuana. When they’re vaporized, they are smooth and very easy to inhale. This is in contrast to blunts and bowls, which are typically rough and difficult to inhale.
Leaves Very Little Residue Behind
While blunts, bowls, and bongs typically leave ash and other types of residue behind after they’ve been smoked, dabs typically leave no residue behind whatsoever. They require only trace amounts of wax to be vaporized, ensuring that no mess is made after they’ve been smoked.
Tips for Dabbing Safely
While there are certainly advantages to smoking dabs, dabs are not, by any means, perfect. Because they require such extreme heat in order to be smoked, and because they produce such a quick high, they can be dangerous in the hands of an inexperienced user.
To remain as safe as possible while smoking dabs, it’s recommended that you follow the below tips.
As we’ve noted several times throughout this guide, dabs are strong; very strong. For this reason, you need to tread lightly when you first start doing them. Move slowly and inhale in only small bursts when first beginning.
If you inhale too much concentrated marijuana in too short a time, you could suffer an overdose. While overdoses of concentrated marijuana aren’t lethal, they do cause severe paranoia, nausea, and other unsavory effects.
Buy from a Reputable Vendor
Whereas marijuana flower doesn’t contain much variation based on who supplies it, marijuana concentrate does. The process of making this substance is a delicate one, and can be easily disturbed if carried out by someone who doesn’t know what he or she is doing.
For this reason, you need to make sure that you buy your concentrate from a reputable vendor. This is the only way to ensure that the concentrate you’re buying clean and safe.
Don’t Play with Fire
Smoking dabs is something which requires extreme heat. If you’re not careful, you could either burn yourself or start a fire.
Pay close attention to both the torch you use and the nail upon your dab device.
